Reducing Recidivism: States Deliver Results

The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health’s CSAMI grant expanded their Maintaining Independence and Sobriety through Systems Integration, Outreach, and Networking (MISSION) model—an evidence-based case coordination model for people with co-occurring mental illnesses and substance use disorders—to include re-entry programming, such as peer support, assertive case management, and transitional housing. CSAMI has funded several MISSION re-entry programs such as MISSION-RAPS (2011-2012), MISSION-I-RAPS (2013-2015), & MISSION-WI-RAPS (2015-2018), which in conjunction with other statewide re-entry initiatives led to a 28% reduction in our states’ 3-year re-incarceration rate.
